What Type of Truck Should You Buy | Pueblo, CO

Southwest Motors sells a wide range of vehicles to residents of Pueblo County, including pickup trucks. First-time truck buyers may be surprised by the sheer variety of truck classes, styles, and body configurations. Our dealership is here to help you decide which type of truck you should buy.

Half-ton trucks

Also known as a full-size truck, this is the most common type of pickup truck sold throughout the U.S., including here in Colorado. It receives its designation by its payload capacity, though the rates have increased as the classification has remained.

The Chevrolet Silverado 1500, GMC Sierra 1500, Ford F-150, Nissan TITAN, Ram 1500, and Toyota Tundra are half-ton trucks. They make excellent all-around trucks for daily home renovation, off-roading, and trailer towing.

Heavy-duty trucks

This classification is most often applied to pickup trucks with bigger engines and capacities than half-ton trucks. Owners use these trucks for towing RVs, large boats, and machinery.

  • Three-quarter-ton trucks: The Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD, GMC Sierra 2500 HD, Ford F-250 Super Duty, and Ram 2500 HD.
  • Full-ton trucks: The Chevrolet Silverado 3500 HD, GMC Sierra 3500 HD, Ford F-350 Super Duty, and Ram 3500 HD.

Some large heavy-duty trucks can also be ordered with four wheels on the rear axle instead of two. These are called dual-rear-wheel trucks, or dually trucks.

Light-duty trucks

Compact utility trucks used to be prevalent and are coming back in style again in the USA. These small trucks are better suited to off-roading and hobbies than massive payload or towing jobs. Plus, they prioritize seating space over bed size, making them great for outdoorsy families in Pueblo. The GMC Canyon, Honda Ridgeline, Chevrolet Colorado, Jeep Gladiator, Nissan Frontier, and Toyota Tacoma are popular light-duty trucks.

Even smaller than those are the Hyundai Santa Cruz and Ford Maverick; they are similar to utes, which are popular internationally but largely absent from the American market. They’re similar to SUVs with a small open bed for occasionally carrying furniture, camping gear, or gardening supplies.

Alternate fuel trucks

Most pickup trucks run on common gasoline, but some models use alternate means of energy. Some engines in larger trucks run on diesel, which result in better torque, higher efficiency, and a longer vehicle lifespan.

Some trucks are even using renewable energy through hybrid or all-electric motors. Models like the Toyota Tundra, Ford Maverick, and Ram 1500 have offered hybridized powertrains, while the Ford F-150 Lightning, HUMMER EV Truck, GMC Sierra EV, and Chevrolet Silverado EV use rechargeable batteries instead of liquid gasoline.

Configurations

Most full-size and heavy-duty trucks can be ordered in a variety of body configurations that let you prioritize passenger seating or bed size depending on your needs. Cabs are typically two or four rows with two or four doors (regular, extended/double, and crew cabs). Beds can be short, regular or long in length.

You can even purchase trucks like the Chevrolet Silverado 4500 HD or the Ford Super Duty® Chassis Cab that are ready to be customized into any form of utility vehicle for your handyman business.
