Chevrolet Equinox vs. Ford Edge | Pueblo, CO

Equinox vs. Edge | Pueblo, CO

The Ford Edge and the Chevrolet Equinox are similar compact, two-row SUVs that many families in Pueblo have trusted for reliable daily drives. Not sure which American SUV is right for you? Here is a list of the major differences between the Chevy Equinox and Ford Edge so you can decide which used SUVs you can buy at Southwest Motors.

Differences in size

When you park the Ford Edge and Chevrolet Equinox next to each other, you immediately notice a visible difference. Although both are two-row SUVs that seat five people, the Edge is larger than the Equinox. It’s a handful of inches wider, longer, and taller — including a wheelbase that’s 5 inches longer.

The greater size of the Edge makes it more suitable for tall or large passengers, as people in the front seats have more legroom and shoulder room, and rear-seat riders have more head room and shoulder room. The Ford Edge also has 9 added cubic feet of cargo space in the rear, approximately 39 cubic feet vs. 30 cubic feet.

The downside to the Ford Edge being larger than the Chevrolet Equinox is that it’s harder to maneuver and park in tight spaces like a driveway or crowded parking lot.

Differences in performance

In recent model years, both the Equinox and the Edge have come equipped with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine as the standard powerhouse. However, the Ford Edge has a larger displacement and typically requires premium fuel. The result is that the Edge is a stronger, performance-oriented SUV.

Its 2.0-liter EcoBoost® engine churns out around 245-250 hp and 280 lb-ft torque. This far outperforms the 1.5-liter engine on the Equinox that tops off around 170-175 hp and 203 lb-ft torque. While the Equinox does offer an optional 2.0-liter motor, it’s nothing compared to the optional V6 on the Ford Edge that’s even stronger. Plus, the Edge has a better transmission with eight gears, whereas the Equinox’s basic transmission is a six-speed gearbox.

The nimble Edge also has larger standard wheels than the Equinox (18 inches vs. 17 inches) and offers all-wheel drive with wider availability on its trims. Both SUVs claim to tow up to 1,500 pounds, but the Ford Edge is sure to struggle less given its robust powertrain.

Differences in efficiency

The upside of having a smaller engine and lighter curb weight is that the Chevrolet Equinox averages much better fuel economy than the Edge. So, if saving money on gas in Pueblo matters more to you than a sprightly ride, choose a Chevrolet Equinox.

Based on EPA estimates for recent model years, the SUV’s standard engine averages around 26 mpg in lower-speed, stop-and-go city traffic and 31 mpg on consistent, fast highway speeds.[1] Even the most fuel-efficient Ford Edge only averages around 21 mpg in cities and 28 mpg on highways, resulting in a combined city/highway average that’s a whopping 5 mpg below what the Equinox has.

Just keep in mind that the Equinox has a smaller gas tank than the Edge by approximately 3.5 gallons. So, even though the Edge is less efficient, it has 40-50 miles in greater range potential by housing more gasoline.

Differences in price

The Edge and the Equinox are priced very differently to appeal to different shoppers. The base MSRP of a new Equinox has remained under $25,000 in recent years, with even lower resale costs as a pre-owned purchase. This competitive price positions the Equinox as a great buy for budget-conscious young adults, retirees, and young parents. With such an economic price point, it’s no wonder that the Equinox is consistently the top-selling Chevy SUV.

The Ford Edge aims for a different crowd. The small SUV sets itself apart from the economy-class Equinox by competing against premium SUVs from more high-end brands. So why pay more for the Ford Edge? It comes with a lot more technology, luxuries, and conveniences.

In addition to being a peppy performance machine, the Edge contains standard features than your basic, bare-bones Equinox does. Many recent Ford Edge models come standard with dual-zone automatic climate control, Wi-Fi hotspot, larger multimedia touch screen, LED headlights, keyless entry, and driving assistance like blind spot monitoring and parking/reversing sensors.
